Expertise: Jaw joint (TMJ) surgery

This lovely chap came to see Mr Elledge having been referred from another Maxillofacial Surgeon for a subspecialty opinion. He had swelling and pain over the left temporomandibular joint (TMJ) (jaw joint) and already had images that showed a degenerated joint. Mr Elledge proceeded to an arthroscopy (key hole surgery) of the joint and with advanced level 2 skills was able to take biopsies of the joint cavity. A diagnosis of a very rare condition (synovial chondromatosis) was made and the next step of a total alloplastic joint replacement was planned. Working in conjunction with industry partners Stryker Ventura TMJ Concepts, a bespoke joint replacement was made for the patient and surgery was carried out at Circle Health The Priory Hospital in Birmingham.

The result…..minimal scarring, no pain, excellent function and a happy patient getting on with life! Everything was discussed at appropriate multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to provide peace of mind and reassurance that the right treatments were offered at the right time, and a consensus was achieved regarding ongoing follow-up.
